Area Rivers Are Still Cold

March 11, 2025

Despite the sun and warm days, area rivers are still cold. Water temps are in the mid 30's and steelhead are not actively on the move yet with the water this cold. The majority of our time, right now, is spent in the lower river sections. We are slowly seeing more chrome fish showing up, which means as the river temps rise, we'll start to see more show up in the upper sections.

The pre-season smallmouth game is on and will only get better as the river temps warm up as well. Right now, many of these fish are in the deeper, slower pools of the river.

The shop is loaded with everything you need for spring steelhead as well as pre-spawn smallmouth so give us a call or swing on by the shop and check us out.

We have been a client of Werkman Outfitters for several years now. Tom and Max are friendly, personable, easy to talk with & encouraging. Their knowledge of the Grand River is second to none. We have targeted smallies & pike, steelhead and salmon. Each species has it's unique habitat, habits, lure selection and challenges. We use them exclusively for West Michigan river fishing and do so several times each year.
