Alaska NakNek River Camp 2026

Alaska NakNek River Camp 2026

About Your Trip

Join Werkman Outfitters Owner and Guide Max Werkman for 7 nights lodging and 6 days of fishing on the NakNek River in King Salmon Alaska for silver (coho) salmon and rainbow trout at Alaska’s NakNek River Camp.

NakNek River Camp is located where NakNek Lake forms into NakNek River. This location allows us to take boats across the lake to fish rivers that flow into the lake. These boat trips are included in our week of fishing and are no extra cost for you to fish. Idivain, Margot and Brooks River are the three places we will travel to, and are primarily rainbow or arctic char fisheries. Brooks River is the epicenter of Katmai National Park, and offers world class rainbow fishing as well as bear viewing. Just like our fly out these places are primarily indicator fishing beads with 6wt rods and floating lines.

Fishing for Salmon

This trip falls on one of the prime weeks for fishing silver salmon or coho salmon. These salmon migrate into the NakNek River from the ocean to spawn. Silvers range from 4-12 pounds and can be in any state of color from fresh chrome straight from salt to big elephant nose and blood red in color.

Some days, conditions make it tough to fly fish, so gear is always an option. Jigs, spinners, and spoons are some of the hardware we will fish as well. If customers would like to bring salmon home with them, it can be cleaned, vacuum sealed, frozen and packed in an insulated box for the flight home. Fish boxes will need to be an additional checked bag on the airlines.

Fishing for Trout

This trip will also include fly fishing for rainbow trout. Rainbows vary from 15-30+ inches and can weigh up to 15 pounds. The NakNek is arguably the best river in Bristol Bay to fish trout due to the sheer volume and size of these fish. This fishery, for rainbow, is purely a catch and release fishery

Trip Details (Contd.)

Fly outs and float plane fishing are offered for an additional cost and are highly recommended. Pricing is dependent on the destination. Flight destinations include the Kulik River and Moraine Creek. This time of year we will be bead fishing these fly out rivers due to the number of salmon spawning. Bears are a very common sight at these places and offer an amazing experience viewing and fishing amongst the bears.

We will be doing an “All-Things Alaska” night at the Werkman Outfitters shop in Early/Mid November to go over all information regarding this trip in depth.

Emergencies do happen and please know we will make every effort to re-book your spot.  However, if we are unable we must uphold this policy, even in the case of an emergency.

Weather/Water cancellations are strictly at the guide’s discretion and are made to ensure a safe and successful trip. In case of a cancellation due to the weather, your deposit will be refunded or another date will be scheduled.

If you need to cancel a reservation and receive a refund of your deposit we must be notified at least 30 days prior to the trip. Should you need to cancel with less than 30 days’ notice, we will make every effort to rebook your trip and refund your deposit. However, if we are unable to find another client for your spot, we will not be able to return your deposit. Unfortunately, we cannot make any exceptions.

Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?

If you have your own gear year feel free to bring it. Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan the trip accordingly. If you don’t want to or don’t have gear, we provide all the gear and equipment. From fly rods and flies to spin gear and terminal tackle we have you covered.

What should I wear on a fishing trip?

We run our trips snow, rain or shine. Weather/Water cancellations are strictly at the guide’s discretion and are made to ensure a safe and successful trip. With that said, You’ll want to dress for the weather.

In the summer you’ll want to make sure wear loose fitting, light weight clothes to protect yourself from the sun. Hats, sunscreen and sunglass are a must. If the weather calls for rain, make sure to pack rain gear. Wear shoes that can get a little wet from getting on and out of the boat at the launch.

In the fall or winter you’ll want to start to layer depending on temps. Usually a base layer, followed by a mid-layer and then an outer-layer will help you thermo-regulate. If you have waders bring those. If not, depending on shoe size we may be able to fit you in a pair. If you don’t have waders, then plan on wearing “Muck” type boots so they can get wet a you get in and out of the boat at the load launch.

If we are ice fishing, you’ll be in heated shanties for maximum comfort. As a matter of fact, you’ll probably shed layers once you’re in the shanty.

Do I need waders?

If you have waders great, wear them. If not, no worries, we can fish right from either our jet sled, drift boat or row frame.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Anyone 17 years of age or older is required to have a fishing license. A Michigan fishing license can be purchased at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Website.

How many people can fit on a boat?

Our jet sled, drift boat and row frame are designed for 3 people, including the guide. This means that you can bring one other person on the trip. If you have more than 2 people, we can easily accommodate your needs with other boats. Just let us know that ahead of time, so we can plan accordingly.
