Salmon have started their spawning process which means we're switching gears to steelhead and trout. Last week offered some much needed rain, bringing our water levels up and driving a small push of steelhead into our rivers. Egg flows have just begun and it has almost been exclusively an egg bite for trout and steelhead. 10ft 7wts and indicator rigs are the weapon of choice. With added water to the rivers, we've had to run longer leaders than in previous years. From fly line to swivel our leaders have been 9ft tapering down to 12lb.
On the terminal end eggs have been our go to. #10 nuke/rag egg style flies in light oranges and peaches have been good. Our best producing presentations have been 8mm beads in Super UV Peach, Hot Egg and Lighten Up. Almost all of our fish have been found behind spawning salmon and in fast shallow riffles. Just remember, we are still early in our steelhead run and covering water is extremely important during this time of year.
On the pike and smallmouth side, the Grand's tribs are in good shape and we continue to sling meatflies. Yard Sales, Bangtails and Swingin D's continue to produce, with the added Circus Peanut mixed in. Color depends on the day but we've primarily been throwing white and chartreuse, black and purple, white and pink.
