Tom was the perfect guide for my son’s first guided trip. Tom’s personality puts you at ease before you even get in the boat. Not only did we have a great time, he was a great instructor and helped us improve our casting technique. My son landed his first ever pike...and it was a monster. What a memory! Tom is a top notch guide outfitted with top notch gear. Can’t wait to do it again!

Fly Fishing for
Smallmouth & Pike

If you’re seeking a spirited fight from hardy, energetic fish, you’ll want to get ready for smallmouth bass and pike season. Though these fish differ in size, smallmouth punch above their weight with aggressive takes and fighting power, so no matter which you catch, it’s sure to be a challenging and thrilling experience.

At Werkman, we fish for both smallmouth and pike on the same trip. Both species go after most streamers and can be found through out the Grand River system.

Do I need to bring my own fishing gear?

If you have your own gear year feel free to bring it. Just let us know ahead of time so we can plan the trip accordingly. If you don’t want to or don’t have gear, we provide all the gear and equipment. From fly rods and flies to spin gear and terminal tackle we have you covered.

What should I wear on a fishing trip?

We run our trips snow, rain or shine. Weather/Water cancellations are strictly at the guide’s discretion and are made to ensure a safe and successful trip. With that said, You’ll want to dress for the weather.

In the summer you’ll want to make sure wear loose fitting, light weight clothes to protect yourself from the sun. Hats, sunscreen and sunglass are a must. If the weather calls for rain, make sure to pack rain gear. Wear shoes that can get a little wet from getting on and out of the boat at the launch.

In the fall or winter you’ll want to start to layer depending on temps. Usually a base layer, followed by a mid-layer and then an outer-layer will help you thermo-regulate. If you have waders bring those. If not, depending on shoe size we may be able to fit you in a pair. If you don’t have waders, then plan on wearing “Muck” type boots so they can get wet a you get in and out of the boat at the load launch.

If we are ice fishing, you’ll be in heated shanties for maximum comfort. As a matter of fact, you’ll probably shed layers once you’re in the shanty.

Do I need waders?

If you have waders great, wear them. If not, no worries, we can fish right from either our jet sled, drift boat or row frame.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Anyone 17 years of age or older is required to have a fishing license. A Michigan fishing license can be purchased at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Website.

How many people can fit on a boat?

Our jet sled, drift boat and row frame are designed for 3 people, including the guide. This means that you can bring one other person on the trip. If you have more than 2 people, we can easily accommodate your needs with other boats. Just let us know that ahead of time, so we can plan accordingly.
