If you're going to fish for steelhead on West Michigan rivers, stick to the larger systems like the Grand and the Muskegon right now. The tribs have not been producing. We need a good soaking of rain with a good bump in flows to shuffle the deck. The fish are stale and a bump in flows will help bring in fresh fish.
Depending on the river, the salmon run is pretty much winding down or done. There are still some in the Muskegon but that will quickly drop off.
We've been having success indicator fishing for steelhead on 8mm beads in Super UV Peach, Hot Egg and Lighten Up from Great Lakes Steelhead Company. If your going to use flies, use #10 nuke eggs and rag style eggs. Fish behind the redds but once the salmon are done, you'll need to go on the hunt and cover water to find the steelhead.
Spey fishing has been productive. If you are going swing, Feenstra's Halloween Leech and Senyo's AI Intruders have been working.
