Fall is the air and cooler temps are inbound. This means it’s transition time on the Grand River and its tributaries. Here’s the latest from the frontlines.
Smallmouth
Smallmouth are still going strong and they’re starting to move to the deeper sections of the rivers.
On the conventional side, try using ned rigs, creature baits and paddle tails to get down to where the fish are. Don’t be afraid to also look for them in the shallower areas as well using search baits.
On the fly side, dredging the deeper sections with crayfish and leech patterns are the ticket. Again, stripping streamers will produce as well in the shallower sections around wood and weed lines.
Remember, that these fish are in transition so look both deep and shallow.
Salmon
Salmon are starting to trickle into the mid and upper rivers we fish. We are seeing a few pods here and there but nothing in in any great numbers yet. The rain will definitely bring in more fish and the conditions are setting up for a good run this year and close to being on time for the kings.
