Full Throttle

April 9, 2025

It's full throttle for steelhead right now. On many of the West Michigan systems they are still in, with some fresh fish still pushing. The Grand has been and continues to remain unfishable and probably will be through the end of the month. Many of its tributaries, however, are fishable for both steelhead and smallmouth bass.

For steelhead we are using the Sage Foundation 10' 7wt, with Scientific Angler Anadro Indicator line on 7/8 Spectrum LT's. Flies of choice are fry patterns, eggs and nymphs.

On the bass side, this time of year, we're using the Sage Foundation 9' 7wt or 8wt with either Scientific Anglers I 2/3 line or Rio's Predator F/H/I on lead eyed jig patterns, like Maddin's Circus Peanuts or Schultz' Cold Water Nut.

Between all our guides we have good availability for the remaining steelhead season and for trout and smallmouth bass. The shop is fully stocked, so swing on by to get geared up for your next day on the river.

I have been fishing many, many years. I have hired many guides in many different places. There are a few guides that rise to the top. Tom Werkman is one of those guides. I got onto his Stealthcraft inflatable and spent 8 hours with a man I had never met. You never know. Well, I would like to say that Tom gave me one of the best float trips I have done. Tom is hard working, great conversationalist, easy going and great at giving little tips on technique. If you want a great day on the water, book a trip with Werkman Outfitters.
