Save A Trout, Fish For Bass

July 1, 2025

The dog-days of summer have arrived and it has been a casters game on the water to say the least.

Topwater season is in full swing on the main stem of The Grand. There has been some bridge maintenance near Lansing sending some sediment down the river. Clarity has been varying day by day. MFC's Bombshell Popper have been a killer pattern for us. Blacks and blues have been top producing fly colors. Dead drifting presentation have been crucial when fishing these popper. A small pop followed by a dead drift over the zone of the fish. Small natural colored streamers have been doing okay as well. 1in - 3in sized streamers are the go-to.

On the trout side, water temps have been quite warm. Please keep an eye on river temperatures. Trout mortality increases rapidly in water temps over 68 degrees. With that being said, when water temps allow for fishing the Hex Hatch has been going off quite well. Northern Michigan river have been experiencing good amounts of bugs. Remember this is an evening/night time hatch and may require being out into darkness to have opportunity.

Swing though the shop to get all your Topwater and Hex flies for the coming weeks of fishing. Hope to see everyone on the water.

This was my second trip with Werkman Outfitters; first time out with Max. My goal for the day was to learn Spey casting. Max was an excellent instructor who delivered the right amount of coaching at the right times. By the end of the trip I was confidently getting lots of line on the water exactly where I wanted it. It was a blast. I can hardly wait to do it again!
